Introduction
The car slips on the flyover, the engine revs, and the garage says, “Clutch plate is finished.” The quote is ₹6,000 from one workshop and ₹14,000 from another. Neither says whether that is the disc alone or a full kit, or whether the flywheel is included.
Car clutch plate replacement cost in India depends mainly on three things: whether the quote covers only the friction disc or the whole kit, how many hours of labour the gearbox removal takes, and whether the flywheel needs work. In the listings we checked on 1 November 2026, Maruti Suzuki’s retail site showed genuine clutch discs at ₹1,130 to ₹2,199 MRP and clutch covers at ₹1,350 to ₹1,720 for Indian-made part numbers. A used-car marketplace’s editorial estimated ₹9,500 to ₹20,500 for a full replacement at an independent workshop on four popular petrol cars. A doorstep seller’s headline said “from ₹999”. Those are listed figures, not quotations, and we found no published authorised-centre price list.
This guide explains what a clutch quote should include, why labour is a large share of the bill, how the flywheel decision works, and how to compare two quotes. It covers manual-gearbox clutches only. AMT, DCT and automatic cars use different systems, so ask the dealer for their own estimate. We did not inspect cars or interview mechanics for this article. Prices come from published listings, technical points from a parts-industry trade article, and the worked example is hypothetical.
Car Clutch Plate Replacement Cost in India – Quick Overview
The table below collects prices that sellers published or that Maruti Suzuki lists at retail, checked on 1 November 2026. It is not a market average and it is not a price list for your car.
Indicative Car Clutch Plate Replacement Prices in India
| Job | Published figure | Source (checked 1 Nov 2026) | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genuine clutch disc (parts only) | MRP ₹1,130–₹2,199 (Indian-made part numbers); ₹7,688–₹10,795 (imported part numbers) | Maruti Suzuki Genuine Parts (one listing shown) | MRP including all taxes, per disc, by part number. For example ₹1,190 is listed for a disc that fits the Ritz, Swift (2011–2017) and Dzire (2012–2017), and ₹2,120 is shown as fitting the Brezza. |
| Genuine clutch cover (pressure plate) assembly | MRP ₹1,350–₹1,720 (Indian-made); ₹7,960–₹8,570 (imported) | Maruti Suzuki Genuine Parts | Per piece, including all taxes. We could not match specific covers to specific cars. |
| Genuine clutch set (cover and disc) | MRP ₹1,088–₹3,550 | Maruti Suzuki Genuine Parts | For example ₹2,150 for a set listed for the New Wagon-R. Whether a release bearing is included is not stated. |
| Release bearing, flywheel, slave or master cylinder | Not verified | – | We found no verified listing for these. |
| Full replacement, independent workshop, petrol cars | Swift ₹9,500–₹13,500; i20 ₹11,500–₹15,500; Nexon ₹13,500–₹18,500; City ₹14,500–₹20,500 | VahanBazaar: clutch guide (17 April 2026) | A used-car marketplace’s editorial estimate with no method stated. It gives labour as 4–6 hours. |
| Full replacement, authorised dealer (same source) | Swift ₹14,000–₹19,000; i20 ₹16,000–₹22,000; Nexon ₹18,000–₹25,000; City ₹20,000–₹28,000 | VahanBazaar clutch guide | Same caveat. Unsourced. |
| Flywheel work (extra) | Skim ₹800–₹2,000; dual-mass flywheel ₹12,000–₹25,000 for the part (diesel cars) | VahanBazaar clutch guide | Estimates, not listings. |
| Doorstep headline price | “Starting ₹999” | Ride N Repair: clutch page | The page has no breakdown. ₹999 is below the lowest clutch-set MRP we saw (₹1,088), so it cannot describe a full replacement with parts and labour. |
| Authorised-centre price list | Not verified | – | No published list found. |
How far to trust this table. Five limits apply.
- The full-job totals come from one marketplace’s editorial, with no stated method, so treat them as a rough scale, not evidence.
- There is an unexplained gap. The same editorial gives ₹7,500–₹11,500 for the parts on a Swift petrol, while the genuine disc and cover MRPs we saw add up to roughly ₹2,500–₹3,900 before a release bearing. The difference may be other parts, variants or higher prices. We cannot tell, which is why you should ask for part numbers and itemised prices.
- The Maruti figures are MRPs for individual parts, including tax. They are not what a workshop charges for a job.
- We could not find a published authorised-centre price list, so the table does not prove that authorised centres cost more or less.
- GST on car parts is a uniform 18% from 22 September 2025, according to a Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan briefing. Check whether your quote shows tax separately.
Actual expenses depend on the make and model, the parts chosen, labour hours, flywheel condition, the workshop and the city.
Clutch Plate or Clutch Kit?
In everyday speech, “clutch plate” usually means the friction disc. But a clutch is a system of parts, and the quote should say which you are paying for. A parts-industry trade article (sponsored by Schaeffler, a clutch maker) describes the pressure plate, or cover, as the clamping part, the disc as the part clamped between it and the flywheel, and the release bearing and linkage as the parts that engage and release it. Most newer manual cars use a hydraulic release system with a master cylinder, hoses and a slave cylinder.
The same article says clutch parts tend to fail around the same time, so replacing them together restores the system, and that doing the whole job while the gearbox is out is sensible because the labour is the same either way. Clutch makers sell a kit of disc, pressure plate and release bearing for this reason. Ask whether your quote is for the disc only or for the kit, and what is on the list.
Why Labour Is a Big Part of the Bill
The gearbox has to be separated from the engine to reach the clutch. The trade article calls clutch replacement one of the most labour-intensive jobs on a vehicle, and the marketplace estimate above puts it at 4 to 6 hours for the cars it lists. Because the labour is similar whether you fit one part or three, a disc-only quote can look cheap and then need the whole job done again later. Ask for the labour hours and whether the price is itemised or a lump sum. Our guide to how car labour charges are calculated explains flat-rate and hourly charging.
Flywheel: Skim, Replace or Leave?
The flywheel is the surface the disc grips. With the gearbox out, a workshop can inspect it, and it may be resurfaced (skimmed) or, on cars with a dual-mass flywheel, replaced. The trade article lists a flywheel, or a dual-mass flywheel where needed, in the complete kit for restoring the system. The marketplace estimate above puts a skim at ₹800 to ₹2,000 and a dual-mass flywheel at ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 for the part, but those are unsourced estimates. Ask whether the flywheel was inspected, what condition it is in, and whether the quote assumes a skim, a replacement or nothing. Ask to see it if it is replaced.
Why Did the Clutch Wear Out?
The trade article says a clutch can slip or chatter because of a worn disc, a weak pressure plate, misadjustment or oil contamination, and that it may fail to release if the linkage is not moving the release bearing. It also says driving habits matter: riding the clutch, even resting a foot on the pedal, heats the disc and wears it faster. So ask what the workshop found as the cause. An oil leak that contaminated the disc, for example, needs fixing too, or the new clutch may suffer the same fate.
Clutch Kit Price: Genuine, OEM-Equivalent and Aftermarket
Part prices vary widely, as Maruti’s own MRPs show: from ₹1,130 for one disc to over ₹10,000 for an imported one. Our guide to OEM and aftermarket parts explains the part types. Whichever you choose, ask for the brand and part number for each item, so you can check the part price for yourself. For a Maruti car, the genuine part number and MRP are on the company’s parts site.
Factors That Affect Car Clutch Plate Replacement Cost in India
- Car model and engine. The marketplace ranges above rise from small petrol hatchbacks to larger cars, and it says diesels cost more.
- Scope. Disc only, or disc, cover and release bearing.
- Flywheel. Leave, skim or replace.
- Hydraulics. A slave or master cylinder that needs replacing adds cost.
- Part type and brand. Genuine, OEM-equivalent or aftermarket.
- Labour hours. Gearbox removal and refit, itemised or lump sum.
- Workshop type and city. Rates, equipment and warranty vary.
- Tax and warranty. Whether tax is shown and whether the warranty is written.
Authorised Service Centre vs Local Garage – Clutch Replacement Costs
We could not find a published authorised-centre price list for clutch work. The marketplace editorial claims authorised dealers cost more than good independent workshops, but it shows no data, so we do not repeat the size of the gap as fact. What you can compare is everything around the price:
- Parts. Genuine, OEM-equivalent or aftermarket, with brand and part number for each item.
- Scope. Disc only or the full kit, and the flywheel decision.
- Labour. Hours and itemising.
- Warranty. What is covered, for how long, and whether it is written. Ride N Repair states a 30-day warranty on its doorstep jobs, for example. Compare what each garage writes on the bill.
- Cars under warranty. Ask the manufacturer how outside clutch work affects your warranty.
How to Compare Two Clutch Replacement Estimates
Two clutch quotes are only comparable when they cover the same parts and the same work. Check these in order:
- Scope. Disc only, or disc, cover and release bearing. Any slave cylinder.
- Parts. Brand and part number for each item, and whether they are new.
- Flywheel. Inspected, skimmed, replaced or not mentioned.
- Labour. Hours, and itemised or lump sum.
- Tax. Bring both quotes to the same basis, as explained in our guide on how to compare two car repair estimates.
- Warranty. What is covered, for how long, and whether it is written.
Illustrative example: two clutch quotes. These figures are invented to show the method. They are not market prices.
| Line | Garage A (hypothetical) | Garage B (hypothetical) |
|---|---|---|
| Clutch disc | ₹2,200 (brand and part number stated) | “Clutch plate” ₹2,400 (brand not stated) |
| Pressure plate (cover) | ₹1,700 | Not mentioned |
| Release bearing | ₹900 | Not mentioned |
| Flywheel inspection and skim | ₹1,000 | Not mentioned |
| Labour | ₹4,000 (itemised, gearbox removal and refit) | ₹4,000 (lump sum) |
| Total before tax | ₹9,800 | ₹6,400 |
| GST at 18% | ₹1,764 (shown) | Not mentioned |
| Warranty | 6 months, written | “3 months”, verbal |
| Total as quoted | ₹11,564 | ₹6,400 |
As written, Garage B is ₹5,164 lower. But Garage B does not say whether the cover, release bearing and flywheel check are included, or whether tax applies. If its ₹2,400 is the disc only, adding Garage A’s prices for the cover (₹1,700), bearing (₹900) and flywheel skim (₹1,000) gives ₹10,000 before tax, or ₹11,800 with 18% GST, which is ₹236 above Garage A. The headline gap disappears once the scope and tax are matched. The point is to ask, not to conclude.
How CarJeevan Helps Compare Two Repair Quotes
CarJeevan’s Car Repair Estimate Calculator & Quote Comparator is a free tool for organising two garage quotations side by side. For each quotation you enter the repair items with quantity, parts cost per item and labour, plus other charges, discounts and tax or fees. You can also tick whether a quotation states the part brand or number, explains the warranty, lists labour separately and requires your approval for additional work. The tool then shows the totals and the differences between the two. Its privacy note says the calculations run in your browser.
It has limits. It has no live price database, does not diagnose faults, cannot tell you whether a clutch needs replacing or a garage is overcharging, and does not guarantee savings. Its output is only as accurate as what you enter. Enter taxes exactly as the quotation shows them, and do not count them twice.
For a clutch job, enter the disc, cover, release bearing, flywheel work and labour as separate rows. A row that appears in one quote and not the other is then easy to spot, and it is a question to ask, not a verdict.
Have two garage quotations for your clutch replacement? Use the CarJeevan comparison tool to organise and compare the parts, labour and other charges entered in both estimates.
Questions to Ask Before Approving Clutch Replacement
These are clutch-specific. For general questions, see our list of questions to ask your mechanic before approving any repair.
Diagnosis
- How did you confirm the clutch is the problem, and what do you think caused the wear?
- Was an oil leak or a hydraulic fault checked?
Scope and parts
- Is this the disc only, or the disc, pressure plate and release bearing?
- What are the brand and part number of each item, and are they new?
- Is a slave or master cylinder included, or needed?
Flywheel and labour
- Will the flywheel be inspected? What condition is it in, and will it be skimmed or replaced?
- How many labour hours are quoted, and is labour itemised?
Warranty and charges
- What is the warranty on parts and on labour, and is it written on the bill?
- Can I see the removed parts?
- Will you get my approval in writing before any extra work or cost?
Car Clutch Plate Replacement Cost – Frequently Asked Questions
How much does clutch plate replacement cost in India?
It depends on the car and the scope. In the listings we checked on 1 November 2026, Maruti Suzuki’s genuine disc MRPs ran from ₹1,130 to ₹2,199 for Indian-made part numbers, and a used-car marketplace’s editorial estimated ₹9,500 to ₹20,500 for a full replacement at an independent workshop on four popular petrol cars. The marketplace gave no method, so treat that range as rough. Real quotes can be higher or lower.
Can I replace just the clutch plate (disc) instead of the full kit?
You can, but the labour is similar either way, and a trade article notes clutch parts tend to fail around the same time. That is why many workshops recommend the full kit. Ask for both prices and compare the scope.
Does the flywheel need replacing with the clutch?
Not always. With the gearbox out, a workshop can inspect it and may skim it or, on some cars, replace it. Ask for its condition and what the quote assumes.
Why is the labour so high?
The gearbox has to be separated from the engine to reach the clutch. A trade article calls it one of the most labour-intensive jobs on a vehicle, and the marketplace estimate cites 4 to 6 hours.
Why do two garages quote different prices for the same clutch job?
Scope (disc only or full kit), parts brand, flywheel work, labour hours, tax and warranty can all differ. A “clutch plate” quote and a “clutch kit” quote are not the same job, so compare complete quotations rather than totals.
Conclusion
Clutch plate replacement cost is not one number. A disc-only quote, a full kit, a flywheel skim and a dual-mass flywheel replacement are different scopes with different parts, and the gearbox labour is a large share of all of them. Published listings give a sense of scale, but the Maruti MRPs and the marketplace estimates do not line up, and nobody we found publishes an authorised-centre price, so use them to prepare questions rather than as a price to expect.
Ask whether the quote is for the disc or the kit, which parts and part numbers are on it, whether the flywheel was inspected, how many labour hours are quoted, and what the written warranty covers. Compare complete quotations, including tax, rather than picking the lowest total. When you hold two estimates, the CarJeevan tool can line them up row by row, while the decision about what your clutch needs belongs with a qualified technician.
