Last reviewed and prices checked: 3 November 2026. Prices are published listings and estimates, and the worked example is hypothetical.
Introduction
You have just bought a car, or you are about to, and the showroom number is only the start. The real question is what it costs to run for a year: fuel, insurance, servicing, tyres, and the repairs nobody plans for.
Annual car maintenance cost in India depends mostly on how far you drive, what fuel costs in your city, and your insurance quote. In the hypothetical example below, a 1.2-litre petrol hatchback driven 12,000 km in a year costs about ₹1,10,000 to run, and fuel is roughly three-quarters of that. Servicing, tyres and a repairs reserve together come to about ₹18,000, and insurance adds about ₹10,500. Your numbers will differ, which is why this guide gives you the formulas, not just one total.
We did not inspect cars or interview mechanics for this article. Prices come from published listings, the example is hypothetical, and every assumption is labelled. Where we could not find a source, such as how often repairs happen, we say so.
Annual Car Maintenance Cost in India – Quick Overview
The table below collects figures published on 3 November 2026 or just before. It is not a market average and not a price list for your car.

How far to trust this table. Four limits apply.
- Fuel prices are for one day. They changed several times in 2026.
- Third-party premiums are the regulated base rates from the insurer’s page. A revision has been reported as proposed, and we found no final notification, so check at renewal.
- Service figures are one marketplace’s averages for Maruti models and exclude tyres and repairs.
- Tyre prices are marketplace listings, not quotes, and the repair ranges are seller and workshop listings.
Build Your Own Yearly Budget: The Formulas
Copy this table and put your own numbers in the right-hand column.
| Line | Formula | Where to get your number |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | (Annual km ÷ real-world km per litre) × price per litre | Your odometer, your fuel app, your city’s price |
| Insurance | (Third-party premium + own-damage premium after no-claim bonus + add-ons) × 1.18 for GST | Your renewal quote, and the third-party slab for your engine size |
| Servicing | The services due this year, at your dealer’s or garage’s price | Your service schedule and price list |
| Tyres | (Set price + alignment and balancing) ÷ tyre life in km × annual km | A tyre quote, and your tread |
| Repairs reserve | Sum of (job price ÷ years between jobs) + a buffer | The price ranges below, with your own interval guesses |
| Total | Add the five lines | |
| Cost per km | Total ÷ annual km |
Worked Example: A Hypothetical 12,000 km Year
Hypothetical car: a 1.2-litre petrol hatchback, driven 12,000 km in a year, in Delhi. The inputs below are labelled as sourced or assumed. This is an illustration, not a market average.
| Line | Calculation | Annual amount |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | 12,000 km ÷ 15 km per litre (assumed) = 800 litres × ₹102.12 (Delhi petrol, 1 Nov 2026) | ₹81,696 |
| Insurance | (₹3,416 third-party for 1,000–1,500 cc + ₹5,500 own-damage, assumed from a renewal quote) × 1.18 | ₹10,521 |
| Servicing | Swift five-year total ₹26,960 ÷ 5 = ₹5,392, rounded | ₹5,400 |
| Tyres | (4 × ₹4,000 + ₹1,000 alignment and balancing) = ₹17,000 ÷ 50,000 km × 12,000 km | ₹4,080 |
| Repairs reserve | See the reserve table below | ₹8,620 |
| Total | ₹1,10,317 | |
| Cost per km | ₹1,10,317 ÷ 12,000 km | about ₹9.19 |
Fuel is 74% of this total. Without fuel, the same year costs ₹28,621, or about ₹2.39 per km. That figure covers insurance, servicing, tyres and repairs.
What changes if
- Petrol at Mumbai’s ₹111.21 instead of Delhi’s ₹102.12: fuel becomes ₹88,968, which is ₹7,272 more.
- Petrol at Delhi’s 6 April price of ₹94.77: fuel becomes ₹75,816, which is ₹5,880 less.
- Real-world mileage of 12 km per litre instead of 15: fuel becomes ₹1,02,120, which is ₹20,424 more.
- Tyres lasting 40,000 km instead of 50,000: the tyre line becomes ₹5,100, which is ₹1,020 more.
The point is not the total. It is that your mileage and your fuel price move the budget far more than any single garage decision.
Fuel
Fuel is the largest line for most cars. Use real-world mileage from your own fill-ups, not the figure on the brochure. Petrol prices on 1 November 2026 ranged from ₹102.12 in Delhi to ₹115.69 in Hyderabad, and diesel from ₹95.20 in Delhi to ₹103.82 in Hyderabad. Fuel prices are revised daily and have moved several times this year, so recompute when the price changes.
Insurance
The third-party part of your premium is fixed by regulation and the same for every insurer: ₹2,094 up to 1,000 cc, ₹3,416 for 1,000–1,500 cc and ₹7,897 above 1,500 cc, plus 18% GST, per Zurich Kotak’s page updated on 16 October 2026. The own-damage part depends on the car’s declared value, age, add-ons and your no-claim bonus, so take it from your renewal quote. Revisions to third-party rates have been proposed, so confirm the figure when you renew.
Servicing
Spinny’s table shows Maruti models costing between ₹2,484 and ₹2,747 at the 10,000 km service and ₹5,976 to ₹6,826 at 20,000 km. It puts five-year totals between ₹25,934 and ₹27,716, which is about ₹5,200 to ₹5,500 a year. Spinny adds that the first three services carry no labour charge, with parts extra if needed, and that labour is charged after that. Use your own dealer’s price list, because these are averages, and ask what each service includes. Our guide to comparing two repair estimates helps when two garages quote differently.
Tyres
A tyre budget needs three numbers: the price of a set, how long it lasts, and how far you drive. Marketplace listings for common small-car sizes ran from ₹2,832 to ₹4,161 per tyre, and ₹6,398 for MRF 185/65 R15, on the pages we saw. Apollo says to expect around 50,000 km and to change tyres by about six years. If you drive 12,000 km a year, 50,000 km takes over four years, so the age limit may come first if your tyres see little use. Our guide to OEM and aftermarket parts covers brand choice.
Repairs: Build a Reserve, Not a Guess
We found no source for how often repairs happen, so the budget uses a reserve. For each job you might face, divide its price by the years you expect between replacements, then add a buffer. The prices below come from published listings. The years between jobs are assumptions, not data. Change them to fit your car.
| Job | Price used (within the published range) | Years between (assumed) | Annual set-aside |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC service | ₹2,300 (listings ₹1,949–₹2,749; see our car AC repair cost guide) | 1 | ₹2,300 |
| Front brake pads | ₹2,300 (₹1,299 from, up to ₹3,200 for small cars) | 2.5 | ₹920 |
| Battery, fitted | ₹6,000 (₹4,500–₹8,000 for small Maruti cars) | 4 | ₹1,500 |
| Front suspension pair | ₹4,500 (₹3,500–₹6,000 for small hatchbacks) | 5 | ₹900 |
| Buffer for unplanned repairs | ₹3,000 (assumed) | 1 | ₹3,000 |
| Reserve | ₹8,620 |
An older car or one with more kilometres will likely need a bigger reserve, and a newer one under warranty a smaller one.
Costs This Budget Leaves Out
This budget does not include the car’s purchase price, loan interest, depreciation, road tax, pollution checks, parking, tolls, cleaning, or accessories. Depreciation is often the largest hidden cost of owning a car. Our guide to calculating second hand car value shows how to estimate it.
Comparing Quotes for Any of These Lines
Service, tyres and repairs are the lines where garages quote differently. Compare the same scope each time:
- Service. Which items are included, parts brand, labour, tax.
- Tyres. Size, brand, price per tyre, whether fitting, balancing and old-tyre disposal are included.
- Repairs. Which part, new or reconditioned, labour hours, warranty.
- Tax. Bring quotes to the same basis, as explained in our guide above.
How CarJeevan Helps Compare Two Repair Quotes
CarJeevan’s Car Repair Estimate Calculator & Quote Comparator is a free tool for organising two garage quotations side by side. For each quotation you enter the repair items with quantity, parts cost per item and labour, plus other charges, discounts and tax or fees. You can also tick whether a quotation states the part brand or number, explains the warranty, lists labour separately and requires your approval for additional work. The tool then shows the totals and the differences between the two. Its privacy note says the calculations run in your browser.
It is not a budget planner. It has no live price database, does not predict your yearly costs, cannot tell you whether a repair is necessary or a garage is overcharging, and does not guarantee savings. Its output is only as accurate as what you enter. Enter taxes exactly as the quotation shows them, and do not count them twice.
Have two garage quotations for a service, tyres or a repair on your yearly list? Use the CarJeevan comparison tool to organise and compare the parts, labour and other charges entered in both estimates.
Questions to Ask Before Approving Any Line of Your Budget
For general questions, see our list of questions to ask your mechanic before approving any repair. For your yearly budget, add these:
- Which service is due this year, and what does it include?
- What is the price per tyre, and is fitting and balancing included?
- Which repairs are urgent, which can wait, and how do you know?
- Is the quote itemised, with tax shown?
- Is there a prepaid maintenance plan, and what exactly does it cover?
Annual Car Maintenance Cost – Frequently Asked Questions
How much does annual car maintenance cost in India?
In our hypothetical example, servicing, tyres and a repairs reserve come to about ₹18,100 a year, insurance adds about ₹10,500, and fuel adds about ₹81,700, for roughly ₹1,10,000 at 12,000 km. Your total depends on your distance, mileage, city and car. Use the formulas above.
How much does a car service cost per year in India?
Spinny’s table puts five-year Maruti service totals at ₹25,934 to ₹27,716, which is roughly ₹5,200 to ₹5,500 per year. It describes these as averages, so check your dealer.
How much does car insurance cost per year in India?
The third-party part is ₹2,094, ₹3,416 or ₹7,897 depending on engine size, plus 18% GST. The own-damage part varies by car and quote, so use your renewal quote.
How often should I replace car tyres?
Apollo suggests around 50,000 km and about six years. Check tread depth and sidewall condition, and replace sooner if they look worn or damaged.
How can I keep yearly running costs down?
Fuel dominates the total, so mileage and driving style matter most. Follow your service schedule, compare itemised quotes for tyres and repairs, and ask whether a prepaid maintenance plan is cheaper for what you actually need.
Conclusion
Annual car maintenance cost in India is not one number. It is five lines, and one of them, fuel, usually outweighs the rest. A yearly budget you can recompute with your own kilometres, mileage, fuel price and insurance quote will serve you better than any model-wise table.
Put your own numbers in the formula table, keep a repairs reserve with assumptions you can change, and compare itemised quotations for service, tyres and repairs rather than picking the lowest total. When you hold two estimates, the CarJeevan tool can line them up row by row, while decisions about what your car needs belong with a qualified technician.
