Introduction
Your car’s AC worked fine until the weather turned. Now the vents blow lukewarm air, and the workshop says, “Gas is low, but the compressor may also be weak.” The estimate that follows could be a couple of thousand rupees or well into five figures, and you cannot tell which lines are necessary.
Car AC repair cost in India depends mainly on what has actually failed. A service with a gas check sits at the low end. A compressor or cooling coil job sits at the high end, because the part costs more and, for the cooling coil in particular, reaching it can take hours. In the provider listings we checked on 30 October 2026, an AC service package started at ₹1,949, while a compressor replacement was listed at ₹13,876 by one provider and from ₹14,999 by another. Those are listed figures, not quotations, and even one provider’s own pages did not always agree.
This guide explains what each AC job involves, what a complete estimate should show, and how to compare two AC quotations before approving either. We did not inspect cars or interview mechanics for this article. The prices come from published listings, the technical points from manufacturer and parts-maker documents, and the worked example is hypothetical.
Car AC Repair Cost in India – Quick Overview
The table below collects prices that providers published on 30 October 2026. It is not a market average and it is not a price list for your car.
Indicative Car AC Repair Prices in India
| Job | Published figure | Source (checked 30 Oct 2026) | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Routine AC service | ₹1,949 for a regular package on one page; ₹2,749 for a similar package on another | GoMechanic: AC service page and AC repair page | Package prices. | Diagnostic charges | ₹49 for a basic AC inspection | GoMechanic AC service page | Ride N Ridepair’s page says its diagnosis is free before you approve work. |
How far to trust this table. Four limits apply.
- These are prices that providers chose to publish, mostly marketplaces. Listings change.
- The same provider’s pages differ. The blower motor is ₹2,270 on one GoMechanic page and ₹6,750 on another, which is why both are shown.
- We could not find a published authorised-centre price list for AC labour or components, so the table does not compare authorised and independent workshops.
- Discounts and tax move the final bill. Hyundai’s nationwide AC checkup camp (10–18 April 2026) offered 15% off AC servicing including gas refill and 10% off components such as the compressor, condenser and cooling coil. GST on car parts is a uniform 18% from 22 September 2025, according to a Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan briefing.
Actual expenses depend on the vehicle make and model, refrigerant type, parts quality, workshop location, labour and the repair actually required.
Car AC Service Cost vs Car AC Repair Cost
A service is preventive. A repair fixes a diagnosed fault. Maruti Suzuki’s owner guidance recommends an AC service every year, ideally in February or March before summer, and says gas checking and topping up is part of that service. The service packages listed above follow the same idea: gas up to 400 g, condenser cleaning and filter cleaning.
Repair begins where service ends: replacing a compressor, condenser or cooling coil, or finding and fixing a leak. Three distinctions help when you read a quote:
- Cleaning vs replacement. GoMechanic lists cooling coil cleaning inside a ₹3,399 package, separate from cooling coil replacement. If a part is dirty rather than damaged, ask whether cleaning is enough.
- Inspection vs repair. A ₹49 inspection or a free diagnosis tells you what is wrong. It does not fix it. Ask whether any diagnostic fee is adjusted against the repair.
- Small items. A cabin air filter is a minor line. Maruti Suzuki lists its genuine PM2.5 cabin air filters at ₹650 to ₹675 MRP, depending on the model.
Car AC Gas Refill Cost in India
Refrigerant type. Most passenger cars in India use R-134a. The International Council on Clean Transportation described R-134a systems as currently prevalent in India in 2022, and Maruti Suzuki sells genuine Floron R-134a in 340 g and 450 g packs matched to the car’s AC system. Some newer or imported cars use R-1234yf, which the same ICCT paper put at about ten times the cost of R-134a in 2022. The two are not interchangeable. Service ports, equipment and oil compatibility differ, and mixing refrigerants can cause wrong pressures and component damage. Your owner’s manual, and often a label on the AC system, states the refrigerant type and quantity. Make sure the estimate does too.
What a recharge should involve. Maruti Suzuki says refilling needs specialised equipment to evacuate and charge the system, and advises against doing it yourself. Ask which gas, how many grams, and whether a leak check is included.
Why a top-up may not fix the problem. Refrigerant is not used up like fuel. If the level is low, gas has escaped. Maruti Suzuki notes that gas can be lost through joints and O-rings, and slowly through hose material. HELLA, a parts maker, points out that a refrigerant shortage lowers cooling and can damage components. A top-up without a leak check may only buy time, and you may pay for gas again next season.
Car AC Compressor Repair and Replacement Cost
The compressor circulates and pressurises the refrigerant. Providers list several levels of work: a clutch coil, a clutch assembly, a seal and bearing kit, reconditioning, or a new unit. Which one is right depends on the diagnosis. An electrical or clutch fault is a different problem from internal damage. Do not accept “compressor is gone” without asking how it was tested, for example clutch engagement, system pressures, noise or a seized pulley.
Replacement is more than one part. MAHLE says flushing the system is mandatory every time a compressor is replaced, because metal debris and old oil can ruin the new unit. It adds that the filter dryer (receiver-drier) and the expansion valve or fixed throttle should always be replaced with the compressor, followed by a leak test and evacuation. Many modern condensers cannot be flushed. So a compressor quote that lacks these lines may be incomplete, or the car’s design may differ. Ask.
What moves the price. Compressor type and brand, whether the part is genuine, OEM-equivalent, aftermarket or reconditioned (see our guide to OEM and aftermarket parts), the extra parts above, labour hours, refrigerant and oil, and the warranty.
Car AC Leakage Repair Cost
HELLA lists the usual leak points as the condenser, evaporator, filter dryer, pressure switch, service connections and expansion valve. Maruti Suzuki points to joints and O-rings. Workshops find leaks with UV contrast dye and a lamp, an electronic detector (useful for hard-to-reach spots such as the evaporator), a nitrogen pressure test, or forming gas.
The cost depends on where the leak is and what must be removed. Re-seating an O-ring is a different job from replacing a condenser or an evaporator. We did not find a reliable standalone leak-repair price, so we give no figure. Ask which component leaks, how the leak was found, what the part and labour cost, and whether the system is leak-tested again after the repair.
Car AC Cooling Coil Replacement Cost
The cooling coil (evaporator) is where refrigerant evaporates and cools the air blown over it, as Maruti Suzuki describes it. In some cars it sits inside the climate-control unit behind the dashboard, and some owner reports on Team-BHP describe the whole dashboard being removed to change it. When that is the case, labour can be a large share of the bill.
Before approving a replacement, ask:
- How was the cooling coil confirmed as the fault? Would cleaning be enough?
- What is the labour estimate, and does it include access work?
- Are the receiver-drier and expansion valve being replaced, since the system is opened?
- Does the price include evacuation, recharge and a leak test?
Car AC Condenser Replacement Cost
The condenser does the reverse of the cooling coil: it condenses and cools the refrigerant (Maruti Suzuki’s description). It sits where airflow reaches it, so it can be clogged with dirt or damaged by debris. Dirt calls for cleaning. Replacement makes sense for a confirmed leak or damage, or after a compressor failure, because many modern condensers cannot be flushed clean.
Check that the estimate names the part specification, includes the drier, states the oil and refrigerant quantity, and covers evacuation and a leak test.
Car AC Blower Motor Repair Cost
The blower is the fan that draws in air and pushes it through the cabin vents. If the AC cools but airflow is weak, the motor may be at fault, but a clogged cabin air filter or an electrical fault can cause similar symptoms. Ask which part has failed before agreeing to a replacement.
The listings we checked show how wide the spread can be: ₹2,270 on one GoMechanic page and ₹6,750 on another. Ask for the part brand and number, and whether the quote covers only the motor or related parts too.
Factors That Affect Car AC Repair Cost in India
- Car make and model. Part prices and access differ. We found no reliable model-wise AC repair prices, so we list none.
- Vehicle segment. Ride N Ridepair lists compressor replacement from ₹14,999 for hatchbacks and sedans and from ₹22,999 for SUVs and luxury cars.
- Refrigerant type. R-134a and R-1234yf cost differently and need different equipment.
- Component price. A blower motor, a condenser and a compressor are in different price classes.
- Parts quality and compatibility. Genuine, OEM-equivalent, aftermarket and reconditioned parts differ in price, fit and warranty.
- Labour. Time to reach the part, plus flushing, vacuum and leak testing.
- Workshop type and city. Rates, equipment and documentation vary.
- Additional repair work. Other faults found once the system is opened, such as contamination or a worn belt.
Authorised Service Centre vs Local Garage – AC Repair Costs
We could not find a published authorised-centre price list for AC work, so we cannot say which type of workshop is cheaper, and no page that claims it without showing evidence should be trusted. What you can compare is everything around the price:
- Parts. Ask whether each part is genuine, OEM-equivalent, aftermarket or reconditioned, and for the brand and part number.
- Labour. Rates and itemising vary. Our guide to how car labour charges are calculated explains flat-rate and hourly charging.
- Warranty. Hyundai gives 6 months or 10,000 km on a genuine replacement part bought and installed by an authorised dealer, and expects you to keep the invoice and return to the same dealer. Ride N Repair states a 30-day warranty on its compressor jobs. Neither is a standard. Compare what each garage writes on the bill.
- Campaigns. Authorised networks run seasonal AC camps, so a discount line can be legitimate.
- Cars under warranty. Ask the manufacturer or service centre how AC work at an outside workshop affects your warranty before you decide.
How to Compare Two Car AC Repair Estimates
Two AC quotes are only comparable when they cover the same work. Check these in order:
- Diagnosis. Both garages should name the faulty part and how they found it.
- Part specification and quantity. Brand, part number, new or reconditioned.
- Bundled parts. For a compressor job: receiver-drier, expansion valve or orifice tube, compressor oil and O-rings.
- Refrigerant. Type and quantity in grams.
- Labour scope. Removal, flushing, vacuum, leak test, recharge, performance check. Itemised or lump sum?
- Extra charges and discounts. Consumables, workshop charges, seasonal offers.
- Tax. Bring both quotes to the same basis, as explained in our guide on how to compare two car repair estimates.
- Warranty. What is covered, for how long, and whether it is written on the bill.
Illustrative example: compressor replacement quotes. These figures are invented to show the method. They are not market prices.
| Line | Garage A (hypothetical) | Garage B (hypothetical) |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor | ₹9,500 (brand and part number stated) | ₹8,000 (brand not stated) |
| Receiver-drier | ₹800 | Not listed |
| Expansion valve | ₹900 | Not listed |
| Compressor oil and O-ring kit | ₹400 | Not listed |
| Refrigerant | ₹850 (R-134a, quantity stated) | ₹1,200 (“gas as required”) |
| Labour | ₹3,000 (replace, flush, vacuum, leak test, recharge) | ₹2,000 (lump sum) |
| Total before tax | ₹15,450 | ₹11,200 |
| GST at 18% | ₹2,781 (shown) | Not mentioned |
| Warranty | 6 months, written | “Some warranty”, verbal |
| Total as quoted | ₹18,231 | ₹11,200 |
As written, Garage B is ₹7,031 lower. But Garage B lists no receiver-drier, expansion valve or oil, does not say whether flushing and a leak test are covered, gives no brand or gas quantity, and does not mention tax or a written warranty. Some of this may be included elsewhere, or may not apply to that car. The point is to ask, not to conclude.
How CarJeevan Helps Compare Two Repair Quotes
CarJeevan’s Car Repair Estimate Calculator & Quote Comparator is a free tool for organising two garage quotations side by side. For each quotation you enter the repair items with quantity, parts cost per item and labour, plus other charges, discounts and tax or fees. You can also tick whether a quotation states the part brand or number, explains the warranty, lists labour separately and requires your approval for additional work. The tool then shows the totals and the differences between the two. Its privacy note says the calculations run in your browser.
It has limits. It has no live price database, does not diagnose a fault, cannot tell you whether a repair is necessary or a garage is overcharging, and does not guarantee savings. Its output is only as accurate as what you enter.
For an AC quote, enter the compressor, receiver-drier, expansion valve, oil and refrigerant as separate rows. A missing row on one side is then easy to spot, and it is a question to ask, not a verdict.

Questions to Ask Before Approving Car AC Repair
These are AC-specific. For general questions, see our list of questions to ask your mechanic before approving any repair.
Diagnosis
- What is the fault, and how was it tested (pressures, leak test, clutch check)?
- Can I see the faulty part or the test result?
Parts
- Is each part genuine, OEM-equivalent, aftermarket or reconditioned? What are the brand and part number?
- If the compressor is replaced, are the receiver-drier, expansion valve or orifice tube, oil and O-rings included?
Refrigerant and labour
- Which refrigerant, and how many grams?
- Does labour include flushing, vacuum, leak test and a performance check?
- Is there any dashboard or front-end removal, and how many hours are quoted?
Warranty and charges
- What is the warranty on parts and on labour, and is it written on the bill?
- What happens if the AC loses cooling again within the warranty?
- Will you call me and give a written update before any extra work or charge?
Car AC Repair Cost – Frequently Asked Questions
How much does car AC repair cost in India?
It depends on the fault. In the listings we checked on 30 October 2026, AC service packages with gas started at ₹1,949, individual replacements such as a cooling coil or condenser were listed at roughly ₹2,900 to ₹5,450 by one provider, and a compressor replacement was listed at ₹13,876 by one provider and from ₹14,999 (hatchback or sedan) and ₹22,999 (SUV or luxury) by another. Real quotes can be higher or lower, and one provider’s own pages differed.
How much does car AC gas refill cost?
The gas itself is a modest part of the bill. Maruti Suzuki lists genuine R-134a at ₹699 for 340 g and ₹850 for 450 g (MRP), with labour billed separately. One provider’s service packages that include gas up to 400 g were listed at ₹1,949 and ₹2,749. If a leak is found, you pay for the leak repair plus the recharge. R-1234yf costs more than R-134a.
Is compressor repair cheaper than replacement?
In the listings we checked, repair options start lower (a clutch coil from ₹3,499) than replacement (from ₹14,999). That only holds if the diagnosis shows a limited fault. If there is internal damage, repair may not be suitable, and a cheaper repair that fails again can cost more. Compare the scope of each quote, not just the total.
Why does car AC repair cost differ between garages?
Scope of work, parts type, labour, refrigerant, tax and warranty all differ. Two quotes with the same headline job may include different parts and different checks. Even listings from one provider can disagree.
Should I get a second opinion before approving an expensive AC repair?
Yes, for jobs such as a compressor replacement, a cooling coil replacement that needs dashboard work, or a multi-part overhaul. Ask both garages for a written diagnosis and an itemised estimate. A second inspection may carry a diagnostic fee, so ask first.
Conclusion
Car AC repair cost is not one number. A gas check, a leak repair, a condenser, a cooling coil and a compressor are different jobs with different parts, different labour and different chances of paying twice. Published listings give a sense of scale, but they disagree with each other, so use them to prepare questions rather than as a price to expect.
Ask for the diagnosis. Make sure bundled items such as the receiver-drier, flushing and leak test are either included or deliberately left out. Compare complete quotations, including tax and warranty, rather than picking the lowest total. When you hold two estimates, the CarJeevan tool can line them up row by row, while the decision about what your car needs belongs with a qualified technician.
This article is general information, not a diagnosis or professional advice. Prices are published listings and estimates checked on 30 October 2026 and may change. Have a qualified technician inspect your car before approving expensive or safety-relevant repairs.
